Patriotic Alliance: the party of recycling?

Patriotic Alliance has completed its registration process at the national level, has named his party officials and even now has three candidates in the short months of existence as a presidential choice and not just as the provincial party to be.

Patriotic Alliance is sold as the party of , taking as one of its main founding ideal of unity of the diverse sectors that opposed the approval of the Central American Free Trade Agreement and the United States and seeks to become an option that will bring together, and, Vieste its formation, what appears is actually a conglomeration of personalities who led the struggle for on the day of 2007.

However, the question is whether it is sufficient that common position to a specific situation in order to build an articulate speech to propose a state model for Costa Rica.

Patriotic Alliance unites experienced rice trade union leaders and activists, we see from the political sectors dissent comes the latest release (Rolando Araya, Mariano Figueres, Oscar Campos, ...), which meets survivors of the traditional left (Manuel Mora Salas), with leaders who passed through several political parties as Celimo Guido (National Liberation Democratic Forces), Oscar Aguilar (PUSC, PAC) and Gerardo Trejos (Progress Party, Democratic Force, National Liberation) , with former candidate of Christian denominational parties (Sherman Thomas-Costa Rican Renovation-), plus many more.

That scenario makes input can not see this game as a new option for its top leaders come from years and years of walking in the national political scene ... On the contrary, what we perceive is a party that is emerging as the space for recycling figures whose previous handle is not functional at present given their positions on the FTA, and from there, to the neoliberal development model advocated by recent governments.

Ideologically, there is a profile Patriotic Alliance (how to conjugate the Social Christians, with social democracy, socialism, the evangelical Christian base, with quantum socialism, with everything else ...), so until now his proposal is built on a desire to be more from what you do not want to be. His proposal is more clear in what we do not want rather than how to build what you want.

That scenario makes the work to build a programmatic basis consistent much and pressing, and the challenge of appearing before the electorate as a viable option, with possibilities of growth, development project, and, most difficult, as an option to refresh the political scene is even greater .

Patriotic Alliance also shows how a party which advocates a large national coalition against the edge continuity, however, when the possibility of achieving that unity of such diverse political sectors is becoming less likely, the big question is, to where rather do a favor to the darling of the two brothers.

"The OAS is laughable?

Honduras's political crisis took a key role, just accomplished the coup, the Organization of American States. Special meetings of the Secretary-General visits the scene of the events, fiery speeches of many ambassadors, tear of vestments for democracy ...

The situation has been such that the organization decides to implement what is enshrined in its charter and unprecedented event in the history of an organization that traditionally governments quickly recognized the coup, suspending one of its members.

Pradójicamente at its previous meeting, the OAS decided to swing back and allow Cuba to re-enter the body, if necessary and take steps toward greater democratic openness, more than forty years after being expelled because of his conversion to communism dangerous times of the Cold War. The OAS in the sixties could accept right-wing dictatorships and national security states human rights violators like few others, but never a government of a socialist, revolutionary and close to the deceased Soviet Union.

The Cuban case can see a very simple, the measure did not work for nothing. Castro's government remained "still in power, the socialist system is still in Cuba, and the OAS very well thanks ...

Thus, in the Honduran political crisis and the suspension of Cuba's membership, we see again the limited nature of the actions and the almost zero effectiveness of OAS sanctions.

The coup government is maintained, the Honduran border are still open (not allow the great American entrepreneurs see their economic interests affected by more liberties and democracy that claim to be ...), a state of siege and toque curfew still in force, the president again Zelayaanuncia entry to Honduras ...

The OAS has been losing ground in the process, attempts at mediation and dialogue are sponsored by the government of Costa Rica, the deposed president seeks support from various governments measures (cutting diplomatic relations, no recognition of the coup government, suspension of financial aid, etc.). Thus, international pressure continues and may increase, but the OAS did not already have more weight ... its measures are not sufficient to force a reinstall of the government and a return to constitutional order.

interventions are general secretary and tried dwindling interest now from reelection, thus denying it legitimacy in the political crisis and thus will further limit their scope of action in seeking a solution to the problem Honduran .

rest Forty years later, the case of Honduras, and the Cuban case, only serve to remind us as Carlos Puebla said that the OAS is laughable ...

Honduras ... much more than a blow

The situation has been living in Honduras since Sunday 28 June has been a great uncertainty. Will he return to Latin America as those times when the military put together with the oligarchies and removed presidents at will, or will even hope to see consolidation of democratic institutions?

Only twenty-seven years out of the Honduran Executive's last dictator, after a similar number of military juntas and coups state, only seven succession of presidents elected by the citizenry us from the dictatorship.

In these twenty years, Honduras remains one of the three poorest countries in Latin America, as one of the areas most affected by violence and insecurity, as one of the states with the biggest problems the distribution of wealth.

in this context that it is no accident occurred, the political polarization that led the government of Zelaya, who came mainly from the popular sectors and took progressive measures, led to the exit they have traditionally used the hegemonic sectors: the Army use and replacement of the government.

However, the Honduran case is showing us that times have changed. Beyond desenclace that such a situation, the international community, perhaps for the first unanimous, has risen against the de facto government and demanded the reinstatement of the democratically elected leader.

Given the international reaction, where the days seem far rather it was the hegemonic power in the region that favored defined coups and rulers in power. Seem distant days when "national security" could be more than any democratic endeavor; seem distant day when the specter of communism-which as we still haunts and frightens many, it was enough to break the law and people disappear.

playing in Honduras is much more than their domestic situation. The outcome of the Honduran case is instructive in understanding that must be banished the practice of using the army to remove and install new executive chairmen, or will they reopen the gate to the hegemonic sectors continue to rule at the discretion of the military supported and curfews.

The Honduran case is that the military reempodere even above the popular will, or will which give new life to democratic systems and worn so disenchanted with our American lives, despite being so young in most cases.

The Honduran case must be that the rulers emphasize that the representation is exercised for all, that legitimacy is built, not imposed, and only achieved national agreements from Dialogic mechanisms governance and can build a more inclusive society.

Until today, shows a crossroads Honduras closer to us than we think, hopefully, finally, a reconstruction of hope and not a painful coup back to traditions that have done much damage to Latin America.
